Positive space is the foreground of the photograph or the "light," while negative space is the background of the photograph or the "dark." Positive space is the object in the frame and negative space is the area around and between the object. Negative space can bring definition to a photograph without taking away from the object in the photograph. An easy way to tell if a photograph has a lot of space would be if it was composed of mostly background and could easily be made into a transparent photograph. Positive and negative space photographs should be composed of just about a 1:4 ratio of light to dark to make them look visually appealing and interesting. Space plays a bigger role in photography than you might think, for it can make or break a photograph.

What is texture?Texture is the feel or appearance of something. Roughness, smoothness, softness, spikiness, and graininess are all textures of things that can be photographed. Texture gives a photograph emphasis on a certain aspect; texture gives it quality and depth. I plan on taking close up and extreme-close up photographs of textures to make it seem like you can feel it just by touching your computer screen. I plan on taking pictures of carpet, glitter, a blanket, a sweater, and maybe a smooth object. ExamplesMy Texture PhotographsI have learned many things in Digital Photography thus far. I enjoyed learning about the history of photography and the meaning of the root words and the word itself. It amazes me how far photography has come in the last several hundred years. All the different types of photographs were very interesting as well. I have learned the importance of photographs taken using the rule of thirds and learned all of the basic camera angles. I have learned how to take diagonal photographs and photographs emphasizing complementary colors. I now understand aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and iso speed and how to use them when taking photographs. My favorite things I have learned thus far is how to edit my photographs in Photoshop and using different angles and viewpoints to take a visually appealing photograph. Digital Photography has been a great class and I am looking forward to a great rest of the year.
